The conversation of money has always been my least favorite part of being a freelancer. I’ve always envied people with managers that can handle that part for them, so they can just focus on the work and not have to think about what exactly you are selling your time for. But, it’s a part of being self-employed and the more comfortable you are with the conversation, the easier it is for everyone.

A good friend and mentor of mine once told me a story about his grandfather, who owned a successful nursery and landscaping business in upstate New York. In the process of negotiating a deal to provide trees and plants for a new development project, he was asked if he could reduce his quoted price, to which he responded, “Yes, I could lower my price, but then I wouldn’t make as much money.”

I’ve always loved that story and think of it every time I find myself in the position to have to negotiate my rate. I’d love to say that I have adopted that hardline attitude and never lower my price, but I …
