In part two of the continuing saga of phase and how it tries to ruin everything in your life, I’ll touch on some more things to watch out for, but I’ll try to keep the tech stuff brief. Even I start to get a bit glazed over when things go too deep down the tech rabbit hole. There are a few things I think are worth dissecting though and I’ll throw in a story along the way.
Don’t F*** With My Phase, Man
My focus has been primarily on drums up to now, because that seems to be where the bulk of problems occur just by nature of how they tend to be recorded with multiple mics on multiple sources in close proximity. But phase issues can manifest in a lot of different ways. Any two audio sources can be out of phase. A bass DI and mic on the bass amp could be out of phase with each other, two mics on an acoustic guitar, two amps being used together, or even effects can be out.
